BSNL WLL / CDMA wireless Internet

For people living outside the broadband circle, where broadband is presently not offered, BSNL has started providing wireless phone with a basic Internet connection. The phone has an antenna in the terrace which is connected to the telephone. A special Datacard is given to use Internet. The maximum Internet speed available would be 144 kbps.

BSNL’s WLL Internet is similar to the Reliance Netconnect, Tata Indicom’s Plug2Surf and Airtel’s Datacard (GPRS/Edge). Other than Airtel, all others use the CDMA technology. These companies are targeting people who need an Internet connection with mobility in mind. For example the data card from Airtel bought in Chennai could be used in Bangalore. But BSNL’s WLL is offered with fixed wireless telephones.

The cost is Rs. 250 per month for unlimited usage with a connection speed of 144 kbps or less. The rental charge for the Datacard per month would be Rs. 150. The cost involved in talking over phone is additional and is not mentioned here. So that sums up to be Rs. 400 per month.

The Pros
The cost is comparatively cheaper to those offered by other ISP’s.
Unlimited usage (at 144 kbps or less speeds)

The Cons
The usage is restricted to your house location only. No mobility.
Connection speed is slow compared to the normal broadband (256 kbps or more).

Downloads are slower. Youtube videos will take more time to load. But where there is no other choice BSNL’s WLL (CDMA) Internet will be the only option.

BSNL website shows they may provide connections using EVDO card in future and the speed would be up to 2MBPS. Anyone using BSNL’s EVDO card in India as of now?

  1. EVDO is being used here at my office and honestly speaking it sucks. basically every wireless net provider in India sucks. Go fro the BSNL broadband which is ofcourse a fixed line connection, but its the cheapest in town and the best for money spent.

  2. James,

Thanks for the information on EVDO.

Normal broadband is the best, no doubt. But where there is no broadband coverage this kind of slow internet is the only available option.

  3. the evdo card is not that slow.it varies speed but it is good when signal is strong.its speed is around 144-172kbps

  4. Wireless connection at jammu is sometimes good and sometimes sucking, anyhow unlimited useage at rs 250 /pm is really good

  5. The EVDO card is not slow as you mentioned. I am using EVDO card at Kerala and getting a speed of 1.3 to1.7 Mbps.
and for rural areas BSNL is providing highspeed internet of 144kbps@30 paise per minute, else u can go for 250 per month unlimited. better than others

Please contact nearest BSNL office for WLL / CDMA wireless internet. Only after repeated inquiries they will heed to your request. The delay in getting a connection may be due to the less number of people opting for internet connection in your area.
