Diabetes - Prevention, tips to cope with it
Diabetes is a disease caused by weakening of nerves due to excess of sugar based substances that get accumulated posing a problem to the free flow of blood inside our body. This results in general weakness, occasionally feeling restless, unexpected fatigue and tiredness, shivering, uncontrollable thirst, frequent urination etc. There is a connection between obesity and diabetes i.e., people who are obese have more chances of getting diabetes. But this doesn’t leave the lean people unaffected though. A person who is lean can get caught in diabetes if his body doesn’t have strength to protect himself from diabetes.
Children are given ice creams, chocolates, sweets; cold drinks all containing sugar and nothing else. They just don’t know how it harms their body. During our previous generations kids were given hot water to keep cough and cold away. Now ice water is drunk by kids. Fast food items containing only carbohydrates are eaten by kids making them suffer from obesity in their early teens. Let children learn about nutrition and the health hazards of junk food resulting in obesity and other diseases. They can adapt to healthy foods if they are well informed.
Some people think diabetes will come only for aged people. This is not true. So many after teens are starting to show symptoms of diabetes now-a-days. There are two types of diabetes the first kind is forefather’s property - if your grandfather had it, your father had it then naturally you will have it (except a few cases). The second kind we decide our own fate - this kind of diabetes is caused by our own eating habits and our reluctant lifestyle. In the age of computers taking away our entire time there is hardly any time to do any physical exercises. And the heavy fast food item’s takes care of the rest of it.
Two things are very important for a diabetic, which is proper exercise and nutritional food eaten. What goes inside your mouth forms the muscles and flesh in our body so it’s natural that we are what we eat. Ask any housewife or a busy office goer what sort of exercise you do daily and the reply will come like this. The house wife will say I am busy with cooking, cleaning the house taking care of my hubby, children. Do I need more? The office goer will say “Huh! What a tensed life I am living the rush hour traffic, office pressure, financial management and how can I get a time for exercises?” Be it housewife or an office goer your tensions, your works of cleaning, cooking, looking after other things will never count as an exercise.
Physical exercise is different from regular work. Don’t consider your regular work will substitute a formal exercise routine. You may be the hardest worker in your office or a great mom looking after and taking proper care of your family. This doesn’t mean you don’t need exercises. For example you may be standing in the kitchen doing some food for 20 minutes say. Or you may be standing in front of the printer for 20 minutes in your office say. Could that be a substitute for a breezy walk for 20 minutes in an atmosphere with natural surroundings? That cannot be equaled to your busy work. When you walk too many things happen in our human system that we fail to notice.
We inhale fresh air. Fresh air is nothing but oxygen. Oxygen forms a part of pure blood cells. When you take a step, from the top to bottom the complete muscles, nerves, bones take a slow comfortable movement with no strain. The accumulated and undigested food particles get digested. The clotted blood cells get circulated throughout the body. Due to this blood circulation you get a feeling of freshness. Slow steady comfortable walking is best preferred. If you are determined to exercise more walk for long distance. But never indulge in speed walking or running. There are some people who advocate running for health. Running burns the calories faster. People especially those who are fat cannot withstand the sudden burning of calories. As a result, heart attacks may arise one good example was yesteryear movie star Muthuraman who was a regular jogger till his last days. He died due to a massive heart attack. When you run the heart beat rate increases at a sudden pulse and obese people cannot handle the immediate change. Whereas even when you walk for a long distance you wont burn calories rapidly. Instead things are done slowly.
Diet and Exercise form an equal ingredient in combating diabetes. Sweets are the first to be avoided. Rice and Potatoes should also be reduced. Greens are best form of vitamins, minerals and rich in iron. Further addition of finger millets, wheat, fresh green vegetables are good for diabetics. Root vegetables are to be avoided excepting Elephant foot Yam (Amorphophallus paeoniifolius). Bitter melon (images) (Momordica charantia) is good for diabetes provided you don’t have heart ailments. Bitter melon for some people with heart attack history causes heart ache. Do keep in mind your past experiences regarding your own health. Eating in proper time is important for diabetic patients. If you are accustomed to eating 3 times a day then continue with it. See to it that you eat at a stipulated time each day. This will also reduce binge eating. Diabetics should not undergo fasting. Never step out of your house without wearing shoes or slippers. Diabetics should take extreme care of their foot especially the layer which is exposed to the ground. If you happen to get any wound or injury in your foot don’t fail to reach your family doctor immediately. Some people will go barefooted for going to some temples. Remember god never asked you to come barefooted risking your eyesight. Yes, injuries in foot if left unnoticed can cause loss of eyesight for diabetic patients. Use diabetic friendly foot wears if available.
An hour of brisk relaxed walk a day is recommended for severe diabetics. Do not get tensed for your ailment. See the positive things in life. Live a relaxed life. After all life is to live and not to worry. Proper lifestyle, regular exercise, nutritional diet and medical advisory at regular intervals can make diabetics live a happy life just like other people.
