Backup Bootable CDs using Nero with a Single R/W Drive
Here is a solution on how to use Nero to write the contents of a self bootable disc to an empty CD assuming that you have only one R/W drive.
When you have a single CD R/W drive you cannot write directly from one CD drive to another. Hence the following step by step method is followed
If you do not have Nero 6 you can get it here from Oldversion.com.
Insert the bootable CD,
Start >> All Programs >> Nero >> Nero 6 Ultra Edition >> Nero Express
Choose the option “Copy Entire Disc”
Under Source drive select the CD drive which you have in your system
Under Destination drive select “Image Recorder”.
This means that the contents of your CD will be written somewhere in your harddisk using the image recorder. Here image means an exact copy of contents in CD and not the literal meaning of image.
Now you will see a button labeled “More” at the bottom. Click it. A new window opens up. Select the checkbox near Simulation and close the window.
Click the “Copy” button.
It will ask you where to save your image file. Create a new folder and give a unique name for your CD image (CD image = contents of CD & not the literal image). Since you selected simulation Nero will test to see if the writing process could be completed successfully and only then it will start writing to hard disk.
After the writing is finished the CD automatically exits out of the drive. Remove the CD.
Now you could see the CD image file inside the folder in your harddisk where you specified. This is a single file. Don’t open it.
Now we shall write the contents to an empty CD. Insert an empty CD. Again open Nero express. You will see an additional menu asking, “Which recorder would you like to use?” By default it will show “Image Recorder”. Change it to your CD drive. Now select “Disc image or Saved Project”. Immediately it will ask for the source of your already burned image file. Select the image file that you just created and press open. See to it that your destination drive points to your CD R/W drive. Specify the writing speed if that option is available. Keep the writing speed minimum so that the CD may work well even in slow systems. Also select the check box “Verify data on disc after burning”. Click next. The CD writing will complete automatically.
Now the contents of your original CD are copied exactly to this empty CD. This way CD’s containing self bootable Linux and other Operating systems could be backed up easily even though you have only one CD R/W drive in your system.
The same technique works for DVD R/W drives too.
