Personal blogs: Are they dying?
Yes, it is true. Personal blogs are dying. Mostly, but not all personal blogs are dying. Some personal blogs are more famous than other topical blogs. I read in a few personal blogs stating something similar to as shown below,
“I started my personal blog, maintained it for some time, tried to build traffic, but nobody cared. So I abandoned it.”
Personal blogs are the most interesting ones actually. People cannot read about google, yahoo, Microsoft and the web2.0 phenomenon all the time. They need a change. When you read a person’s thoughts and find something similar in you, then you start liking that blog. All simple things happening in life can be posted in a blog. People are curious to know about the various cultures, beliefs and the happenings around fellow human beings.
When I started this blog I used to visit a lot of blogs where I would see a small image displaying “Get Firefox” or just showing “Take back the web”. I didn’t know at that time, what it was. I thought it was some sort of honor that they got for their site, a privileged member of a certain group etc. Only later I came to know that these people are supporting a new open source browser called Firefox. I saw this firefox banner in so many personal blogs then I downloaded firefox and tried it. After using firefox I wanted to show the badge myself in my blog.
What does this mean? When you support a movement or say something people ignore you at first but they start to notice you after some time for sure. The same holds good for personal blogs too. I say this because only after reading a review in one of the personal blogs I turned towards firefox.
Another story I wanted to share is when tsunami occurred everyone in Chennai was frightened and the death toll was just making news hour after hour. I wanted to do something useful but I didn’t know what to do. At that time I read a post by a fellow blogger, requesting readers to help the affected and the post had links for people to donate for tsunami. That person did what I wished to do. I immediately published a new post in my own blog asking people to help for tsunami. Such is the power of personal blogs.
Things that you can get only in a personal blog
- A personal blog will recommend a product only if the blogger is impressed at it. After all it’s a personal blog. Isn’t it?
- Personal blogs carry not only the information but also the blogger’s personal experiences which you may not get by reading a regular website or other special topic blogs.
- Personal blogs cover a lot of varied topics instead of talking about the same thing over and over again.
But when I read this post, all I could do is agree to Ronald Heft,
“I don’t think personal blogs will be around much longer. The blogs which are focused around one person’s life are going to fade. What personal blogs remain will be topical; focusing in on a subject which interests the author.”
A personal blog showcases your personality. A personal blog shares your seasoned thoughts. The topics may be anything and everything excluding the ones like “I woke up at 8 am, brushed my teeth, and took bath……..went to bed at 11pm”. If your blog is not of this kind then I am sure your blog will survive against all odds even though it may be personal.
