Thunderbird Gmail Configuration v1

This post will take you step by step for configuring Mozilla Thunderbird to send and receive Gmail messages via POP access. Be sure to enable POP access for your Gmail Account first.

Before we proceed any further you need to know that the

Incoming Mail Server (POP3) => pop.gmail.com

Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) => smtp.gmail.com

POP Port => 995

SMTP Port => 465

1. Open Mozilla Thunderbird

File >> New >> Account

Select “Email Account”

2. Click next and here you are asked your name and email address. Fill it.

3. Click next and select the radio button called POP. Under “Incoming Server” write

pop.gmail.com

Do not select “Use Global Inbox (store Mail in Local Folders)”

4. Click next and under “Incoming User Name” write down the full gmail address.

5. Click next and under “Account Name” Write a name to identify the email address for example JOHNY1234 GMAIL. This is for your reference only.

6. Click next and do not select “Download Messages Now”.

7. Click finish. In the left side you will see a JOHNY1234 GMAIL as shown in the figure below.

8. Right click on it and select properties.

Under server settings select the radio button “SSL”. Put a tick mark in “Check for new messages every 10 minutes”. Do not tick the other check boxes.

9. Now go down in the left side you will see “Outgoing Server (SMTP)”. Click and select it.

10. At the right side click on the “Add” button. You will see a dialog box as shown in the figure below. Under SMTP Server give a description such as JOHNY GMAIL. The server name is smtp.gmail.com. Under “User Name” write your complete email address. Under use secure connection, select the radio button “SSL”. You will note that the Port number will become 465 automatically.

11. Click on Ok. Now you will see the result as shown in the figure below.

12. Now select JOHNY1234 GMAIL at the left side. On the right bottom you will see “Outgoing Server (SMTP)”. Select “JOHNY GMAIL - smtp.gmail.com” from the drop down menu and then click “Ok”.

13. Send a test message to one of your other email address. Only for the first time it will ask the password. Select the option “Use Password Manager to remember this password”.

14. Again when you receive an email message for the first time it will ask again for the password. Even here select “Use Password Manager to remember this password”.

That is all you have to do.Mozilla Thunderbird will never ask your password anymore. If you followed these steps correctly Thunderbird will send and receive gmail messages without any problem. Use the keyboard shortcut “Ctrl+Shift+T” to receive all messages for multiple email ids. You can also receive messages for individual accounts by right clicking and selecting “Get Messages for account”.

Gmail and Thunderbird makes sending and receiving emails easier and saves time. No need to open your browser for checking mails. Just Open Mozilla Thunderbird for sending and receiving Gmail messages.
