Classical devotional movies could be seen again and again and it would never bore you. One such movie is Dhasavatharam. Many questions in our mind get a sort of answers when we watch this kind of movies. This is the second time I watched Dhasavatharam (Tamil).

It depicts the ten incarnations of Lord Mahavishnu. Everyone may know the stories but watching the movie makes us believe as though everything happen in front of us. Here is a brief description about the 10 incarnations of Vishnu as shown in the movie.

1) Matsya avatar: The lord takes the form of a giant fish and destroys the ratchasa called hayagriva who hides the four Vedas from Brahma.

2) Koorma avatar : when devas and the asuras mix the Parkadal for getting amudham the mountain they use as matthu falls under sea and Srihari takes the form of a tortoise and raises the mount helping the devas get the amudham.

3) Varaha avatar: Vishnu and Brahma try to find the top and bottom of Shiva where the former takes the form of a varaha (pig) digs deep down the earth and finds Shiva’s feet. (Related Post)

4) Narasimha avatar: narayana takes the form of narasimha, a man with a lion’s head to kill the asura king Hiranya.

5) Vamana avatar: Srihari takes the form of a brahmachari and asks for 3 foot of land, where he counts the entire earth in his single foot, the second feet he uses to count the sky and asks for the 3rd foot of land. King Mahabali asks Vishnu to put his leg on his head for the sake of 3rd feet.

6) Parasurama avatar: parasurama kills his own mother to fulfill his fathers order. There is a Tamil proverb here worth noting, which means no temple is equal to your mother and no mantra is equal to your father’s words. parasurama avatar depicts this truth.

7) Ram avatar: this is avatar where the lord shows man how to live. Every step taken by Rama has a many inner meanings. Rama abides by dharma at the same time lives life like a common man. It should be followed by all humans. Gandhi was a staunch devotee of Sri Ram.

8 ) Balarama avatar: In Ram avatar Lakshmana (who is none other than aathi seshan) spends all his life doing service to Sri Rama. To recognize this Vishnu takes Balarama avatar where Krishna, his younger brother won’t do anything without Balarama’s consent.

9) Krishna avatar: Krishna is the centre of the epic Mahabharata. This wonderful epic called Mahabharata has thousands of stories in it. Krishna’s message is “Though Adharma may seem to succeed; Dharma will reign supreme at last”.

10) Kalki avatar: Kalki avatar has not been taken yet. It’s the time when there will be no dharma in this universe. People will resort to all sorts of evils. Kalki avatar will mark the end of the present days also called Kaliyugam.
