It all started with the former Government of ABV. The then ruling party B had a coalition with D and put forth a rule stating that the people who wanted to see pay channels like star TV, star movies… should buy the set top box. Only then they may be allowed to watch pay channels. But after a few days the B government cancelled this rule and cleared the air saying there is no need to buy a Set Top Box. But the D which was an ally of B imported Set Top Boxes in large numbers. The D was unable to sell the Set Top Boxes and found no takers for the Set Top Boxes.

Then the election came again. This time the D joined hands with the congress and the congress got the power. Since the D headed for a heavy loss due to the import of Set Top Boxes the D now wants to sell the remaining Set Top Boxes that it is having.

So SC the cable provider for Chennai city which is a wholly owned subsidiary of S TV has blocked the pay channels in Chennai city. Throughout the country people are watching the pay channels without buying set top boxes. The only exception is Chennai. In Chennai if a person wants to get the pay channels he has to buy a set top box from SC which costs around Rs. 5000/= approximately. Also one has to pay for the monthly viewing of the pay channels. This has to be paid to the SC every month. This is the case for people living in Chennai. While people outside Chennai city limits are enjoying all the channels without buying any set top box.

Why does the SC impose such rules to Chennai city residents alone? If there is no need to buy Set Top Box for the entire country, what is the need for Set Top Boxes only in Chennai? For SC’s personal loss due to the import of Set Top Boxes why is the residents of Chennai punished?
