About Leg Fractures

Steps to avoid a fracture in your legs

1) Avoid traveling in a two-wheeler - This may not be possible as most Indians rely on their own two-wheelers/bike. Anyhow we can reduce the usage by walking till the railway station or bus stand.

2) Avoid Obesity - This is very important. As the body acquires more weight, the legs would be unable to bear the weight of the body. Again to reduce weight walking will be helpful.

3) Avoid Cool drinks - It is beyond doubt that cool drinks weaken the bones of the body. The aerated content will make the bones and the limbs tender and weak. Also avoid frozen foods as they have the same properties of cool drinks.

4) Coffee & Tea - Coffee is said to weaken the nervous system and tea is said to weaken the bones. Those who can’t live without them can at least reduce the number of intakes.

5) Milk and Greens - Milk is the best drink that can strengthen the bones. Greens also do the same.

It is important that the legs must bear the weight of the body without much strain. We put oil in vehicles to get a smooth ride. The same way oil is needed for our body too. We take oil baths. At that time we can apply oil to our leg joints, arms, palm etc., this will be helpful in strengthening the body in the long run.

Sunlight: Yes, Sunlight is important for our body. Sunlight contains vitamin E which is helpful in bone protection from fractures. It is not necessary to go and stand in the sunlight at noon while the temperature is at its peak. But at least during mornings or in the evenings the sun’s rays will fall on us. It helps in developing strong bones.

What happens if you get a fracture?
Even though the treatment for fracture is available nowadays, it will make the person bedridden for at least 30 days. Also they would need others help at that time, without which they cannot do their day-to-day cores. Hence it would be better to avoid a fracture in your lifetime as far as possible by taking the above mentioned steps.

Also nowadays the medical community has discovered bone replacements. Just by placing an iron rod instead of the bone, they say the person can function normally. But there are also cases in which the person after taking the operation suffers lots of side effects which the doctor would be unable to solve.

Puthur Kattu / Maavu Kattu:
There is an alternative treatment (Indian Medicine) for bone fractures. It is Puthur Kattu. It is very famous in most parts of south India. They mix sesame oil (gingili), egg white (liquid) and other herbal oils to make a paste and apply it on the fractured region. They tie the kattu (cloth) after putting the bamboo stick parallel to the fractured bone. They leave it for 10-15 days. This treatment is repeated 2 to 3 times. During this time the broken bones join together.

I think this will be a better treatment for fracture. Also it is safe. They don’t replace any of your bones. This is even suited for a heavily damaged bone fracture.

To sum up, a fracture can not be avoided. But we can reduce the chances of getting a fracture by following some of the above mentioned suggestions. Obviously, Prevention is better than cure.
