Happy Pongal 2005!

This year Pongal festival falls on January 14. Pongal is celebrated throughout tamilnadu. Other parts of India celebrate Pongal in the name of Makara Sankaranthi. Pongal is also called as ‘tamilar thirunal’ meaning holy day for tamils. The sun god surya narayana is worshipped on the day. People thank the sun god for the good harvest and wealth he had given the previous year. It is only because of sun, the rice crop flourishes. Rice is the staple food of tamilnadu. So it is a thanks giving ceremony. In sabarimala Ayyappa temple shrine makara jothi appears on the Pongal Day.

People celebrate Pongal by wearing new clothes. They offer sugarcane, vegetables etc., to the sun god. Pongal one of the favorite foods of the tamilians is prepared on pongal day. Also Chakkarapongal(sweet pongal) and vadas are prepared.

I wish you a happy pongal on this occasion.
