My Chennai - an introduction
India is a big country. It has a very large population. The total area (square kilometers) in India is much less when compared to that of the United States of America. But the population in India very much exceeds the population in USA. Many people live under poverty here.
Tamilnadu is located at the southern part of India. The capital of Tamilnadu state is Chennai. Chennai is a place where tamilians, telugus, malayalis and the kannadigas live. Though tamilians are the majority in Tamilnadu. Chennai the capital city of tamilnadu is always water scarce. Chennai is a place where the climatic changes are nil. The climate of Chennai can be aptly described as hot, hotter, and hottest. That’s it. Rain is very scarce. Hence there is a shortage for drinking water.
People stand in long queue to get water for drinking and household purposes. Drinking water is sold in the private market from small packets of Re.1/= to the hundred rupees cans. The water is also not clean. It is full of bacteria and viruses. People usually boil the water and use it for drinking purposes as cholera, diarrhea, and virus infections are common in Chennai and Tamilnadu.
The electricity is not regular. There is power failure often. It has become a habit to see frequent power failures in Chennai.
The garbage are thrown away in the road itself. People cannot walk in the road due to the huge garbage, the industrial wastes and the bad odor coming out of it. This can be experienced in many parts of Chennai.
Education is available only for the privileged. When it comes to higher education, only money speaks. The private educational institutions are keenly interested only in the rich students. Though there are plenty of private engineering colleges in Chennai and other parts of Tamilnadu they cater only to the people who can pay Rs.15000/= per semester(6 months). The government though runs educational institutions; they are very few in number, considering the vast population in Chennai and around.
